A Treasury of Wood Type Online

Finding_126_medium

H, F & J walk us through Unicorn Graphics(!) newly launched Wood Type Museum highlighting type by Hamilton Manufacturing Co, Vanderburgh and Page.

It’s harder to find Page or Vanderburgh type these days (or possibly these manufacturers didn’t label the type – look on the side of the A’s), but you do come across Hamilton cuts often enough.

In addition to being beautifully designed/cut faces, they are impeccably made from good materials (aged, treated end-grain boxwood, cherry, mahogany, or maple). When you buy wood type, you end up paying a premium for Hamilton fonts. I’ve bought and printed with lots of type over the last few years and Hamilton wood type is usually worth the price (though wood type is typically always vastly over-priced on ebay).

We cut tall grass

I saw this sign in New Orleans’ Lower 9th Ward this past October. Most every lot in this area was overgrown.

I dig the ligature here in the word ‘tall.’

Recently found in a flea market this marvelous 19th Century Belgian poster (a sign painter catalog cover actually) that shows different 3D type effects. I wish I had found the whole catalog.

NB. I’ve been a fan of Jack Usine’s fonts – Jack’s firm in Bordeaux is called Smeltery – for a long while now. Also, don’t miss his photo-signage-typography blog Jules Vernacular.

What awesome type

Marlene came over the other day and brought a beautiful Mexican architecture book along with her. It was published in the 60s. She bought it in a second-hand book store in Mexico City if I recall correctly. The type throughout has this archetypal 60s Mexico feel.
